Welcome to the SIAMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) list! Many common issues are listed here so please look through the FAQs to see if your question/issue is listed before contacting the Help Desk.

General SIAMS Questions
  1. What is the SIAMS?
    SIAMS provides a single, secure, centralized authentication and authorization service to access online systems for Alberta Advanced Education, Alberta Human Services, associated ministries, and associated organizations.
  2. What is the purpose of a SIAMS Account?
    SIAMS Account allows citizens to register for a single "User Id and Password" that will permit access to all online, secure applications being offered by Alberta Advanced Education, Alberta Human Services, associated ministries, and associated organizations.
  3. What are the benefits of a SIAMS Account?
    The benefits are that you will be able to access an ever-increasing number of online applications using only one Username and Password. Your SIAMS Account becomes your passport to current and future online services offered by Alberta Advanced Education, Alberta Human Services, associated ministries, and associated organizations.
  4. What can I do with my SIAMS Account?
    Your SIAMS Account is used to access secure online applications and services offered by Alberta Advanced Education, Alberta Human Services, associated ministries, and associated organizations. Current and future applications serve a number of client groups including post-secondary students and apprentices.
  5. How can I get further assistance?

Username and Access Questions
  1. Why have I been Locked Out?
    As a security precaution, anytime your SIAMS account is unsuccessfully accessed five consecutive times, your account will be automatically locked for the 30 minutes. Your account will be automatically unlocked after 30 minutes or, if you reset your password. If you require immediate assistance, please contact the Help Desk. These measures are in place to help protect your account from unauthorized access.
  2. I have forgotten my SIAMS Username.
    Go back to the website you are trying to access, follow the steps to access the login page, then click the "Forgot Username" link on the Login screen. You will be asked for your email address. Your Username will be emailed to that address.

    If you have tried the "Forgot Username" option and have received either of the following messages:
    "The Email Address you have entered was not found in our system. Please try again or contact the Help Desk for more support. "
    Or
    "Multiple accounts attached to the same email."

    Then you will need to contact the Help Desk for assistance.
  3. What are the recommendations for a SIAMS Username?
    Your Username must be between 6 and 20 characters long. It is not case sensitive, and can be a combination of letters, numbers and characters with the exception of curly brackets, space character, and the following characters ‘ ” / \ & < > + = ; : , [ ] ( ) * | #. It should be something you will remember. If the Username you want to use has already been taken by someone else, you will have to select a different Username.
  4. Why am I getting a message that I already have an account?
    If you are attempting to create a new SIAMS account and you receive the following message then you already have a SIAMS account. Please go back to the login page and attempt to retrieve it using the 'Forgot Username' and 'Forgot Password' links. If you cannot recover your SIAMS account then you will need to contact the Help Desk for assistance. Duplicate Account Error
Password Questions
  1. I have forgotten my password.
    Go back to the website you are trying to access, follow the steps to access the login page, click the "Forgot Password" link on the Login screen, and use one of the options to reset it (if one option doesn’t work make sure to try the other options as well). Also read the following important points about recovering your password:
    -  If you are trying to reset your password using either the "Reset using my mobile phone number" or "Reset using my email address" options remember that an access code will be texted/emailed to the mobile number/email address that you entered when you created your account. If you don’t receive the code   within a few minutes it probably means that the number/email address attached to your SIAMS account is different than the one you are using now.
    -  When resetting the password keep in mind that you cannot use any of your prior SIAMS passwords.
    -  If, after trying all of the password reset options that you setup when you created your account, you still can’t get into your SIAMS account then please contact the Help Desk for assistance.
  2. Why has my password expired?
    Once every 767 days, we enforce a password change for all users as a security measure. Please follow the directions to create a new password. These measures are in place to help protect your personal information.
  3. What are the recommendations for passwords?
    Passwords must be 8 to 20 characters long and include at least one upper case, one lower case and one number or special character. The special characters allowed are "!", "@", "#", "$", "%", "=", "+", "_". Spaces are not allowed. When resetting the password keep in mind that you cannot use any of your prior SIAMS passwords. We suggest passwords not contain any obvious elements from your life such as a child’s or spouse’s name. These measures are in place to help protect your personal information.
  4. When will I have to renew my password?
    SIAMS will keep track of your password expiry date. Passwords must be renewed every 767 days. These measures are in place to help protect your account from unauthorized access.
  5. May I change my password before the password expiry date?
    Yes. We email you when your account creation is complete. Click the link at the bottom to go to the SIAMS Profile Update login page. Once you login you can update your SIAMS profile (password, email address, phone number, etc). You can also use this link to access the SIAMS Profile Update screen.
  6. How can I change my password?

  7. I cannot recall the answers to the Challenge Questions. What should I do?
    When you created your account you may have selected 4 challenge questions to help you recover your password in the event that you forgot it. If this is the case, then keep in mind that the answers you provide must match exactly with what you originally entered; the answers are not case sensitive. You are only asked to provide answers to two of the questions so, if you find you can’t remember the answers that you originally provided, then reload the browser page to see the other questions.

    If you are unable to reset your password using the Challenge Questions, then try the other password reset options. If you are unable to reset your password using any of the options that you setup when you created your account then you will need to contact the Help Desk for assistance.
Consent and Usage of Personal Information Questions
  1. Why must I provide my consent?
    Some of the SIAMS identification information that is about to be collected from you is personal in nature. The collection, use, and storage of this information is subject to various privacy legislation. This may include obtaining consent from the owner prior to collection. You can learn more about privacy issues that affect you from the Privacy Statement.
  2. Why am I being asked for personal information?
    In order to establish a SIAMS Account, citizens are being asked for basic identification information. This, along with other identification data collected (such as Alberta Student Number), will assist us to match your SIAMS Account to your existing records (such as your high school transcript).
  3. I refuse to provide SIAMS Identification Information. Can I still access secure online applications for Advanced Education and associated ministries and organizations?
    No. At the present time, SIAMS Identification Information, along with other ministry-specific identification data, is needed to identify you, and permit access to the secure online applications. Please contact Alberta Advanced Education or the associated ministry or organization directly to obtain service information.
  4. I have married, or changed my name. Which surname should I use?
    We recommend that you use the surname under which you primarily conduct your legal affairs today.
  5. How will my Phone number be used?
    We may use your phone number to contact you in case of problems. If you use a North American mobile phone number then you can use it to reset your SIAMS password.

    Your phone number will not be used for any unsolicited calls, nor will it be shared outside of Alberta Advanced Education, associated ministries or associated organizations.
  6. How will my Email address be used?
    We may use your email address to contact you. Your e-mail address will not be used for any unsolicited correspondence, nor will it be shared outside of Alberta Advanced Education, associated ministries or associated organizations.
  7. How can I modify my information?
    We email you when your account creation is complete. Click the link at the bottom to go to the SIAMS Profile Update login page. Once you login you can update your SIAMS profile (password, email address, phone number, etc). You can also use this link to access the SIAMS Profile Update screen.
  8. What SIAMS identification information can I change?
    You can change your SIAMS username, first name, last/family name, phone number, email address, password, and answers to the Challenge Questions. In order to update your SIAMS profile, please see question #7 above.
  9. Why am I being asked to respond to Challenge Questions?
    Your answer to the challenge questions will be used to identify you if you forget your password. You will be able to assign a new password without calling the Help Desk.
Technical and Browser Questions
  1. What could be the reason for technical difficulties?
    The SIAMS login portal is updated regularly and, when upcoming updates are scheduled, notices are displayed on partner websites (i.e. Apply Alberta, Student Finance, MyTradesecrets, etc). If you encounter a SIAMS outage, go back to the website you are trying to access and see if there is an outage notice posted. If there is, you will need to try again once the outage is over.

    Another reason why you may be experiencing technical difficulties is a browser/device conflict. Some things you can try are: clear out your browsing history and/or use a different device/browser.

    If you have tried the suggestions above and are still experiencing technical issues contact the Help Desk for assistance. Be sure to provide the exact error message you get.

  3. What if my browser is set to block Pop-up windows?
    If your browser blocks pop-up windows, you may not see important messages from SIAMS. Please ensure your browser is set to allow Pop-up windows.
